Episode 45:Broken Brown Egg W. ReginaTownsend
Black women experience infertility at almost 2x the rate of our counterparts and yet we are least likely to seek treatment. In today’s episode, I’m chatting with The Broken Brown Egg Founder, Regina Townsend. We discuss her own journey into motherhood from trying to conceive, learning of a medical diagnosis (hypothyroidism, PCOS, blocked Fallopian tubes, and Type 2 diabetes), and accepting the path of IVF and all of the challenges associated with that. Regina talks mental health, reproductive health and creating a space for black women to share in their experience of infertility. Her website The Broken Brown Egg is not only a place where women who are trying to conceive can go to read Regina’s blog, but also a place where they can learn about the many resources available to them such as financial assistance for IVF, information on donor eggs, black reproductive endocrinologist, support groups and so much more.
As Regina says in our conversation, it’s time to talk about infertility. The more women can feel comfortable in sharing their stories, the less shame there is to be associated with it.
